Principal’s Corner…for December 1, 2018

“O come, O come, Emmanuel…” The strains of the familiar hymn remind us that we are ready to start the process of preparing for the Birthday of our King.  In just a little over three weeks we will be caught up in the excitement of Christmas.  But, for now, we need to think about the preparation.  We know that homes will be glistening with lights and decorations, cards will be written, presents will be wrapped, cookies will be baked, and young children will write letters to Santa.  However, we mustn’t forget the true “reason for the season”.  What gift will we give to our King to celebrate His Birth?  It sure isn’t too early to think about that!

In the middle of October, you may remember that our Student Council visited the Passionate Monastery in Jamaica Estates for the taping of “The Sunday Mass”.  Of course, the taping is for weeks in advance.  So, our children were present for the anticipated mass for the First and Second Sundays of Advent.  That means that they will be on TV this week and next at 9:00 AM Sunday morning on Channel 10/55.

It is the practice at St. Raymond School that during Advent and Lent the classes alternate turns in attending the 8:45 mass during the week.  Obviously, that practice will begin this Monday and continue for the next few weeks.

I’d like to take this opportunity to invite EVERYONE to our annual CHRISTMAS CONCERT this Wednesday, December 5th in the school auditorium at 7:00 PM.  The Band and Chorus will both be performing and, I believe, it is well worth the time to join us.  It is the perfect way to get into the Christmas spirit – AND it’s free!!

Let’s take a look at the week ahead:

  • Monday:Second Trimester begins; Grade 8 to morning mass; Baked ziti
  • Tuesday:Grade 7 to morning mass; Pizza Day; Spirit Basketball with Holy Family after school; Parish Children’s Choir from 5-6 PM in the school auditorium
  • Wednesday:Band lessons with FULL Band at 8:00 AM; Kindergarten to morning mass; Dress rehearsal for the Concert; Hot dog day; CHRISTMAS CONCERT at 7:00 PM in the auditorium
  • Thursday:Grade 6 to morning mass; Bagel day; Junior Sodality at lunchtime for 1-3 and after school for 4-8; Math Enrichment I at lunchtime; Spirit Basketball with St. Joseph’s after school
  • Friday:Grade 5 to morning mass; Hot pretzels at lunch; Math Enrichment II at lunchtime.

Already we have had a “KISS AND DROP” day, so let me once again review the procedures for delivering your children to the school each morning.  Please remember that when you enter the parking lot, you are driving to the right against the arrows and approaching the cafeteria door so that the children can safely be dropped off closest to the door.  The child(ren) should be READY to exit the car immediately and come into the building with coats on and backpacks close at hand!! PLEASE DO NOT PARK IN THE MIDDLE OF THE LOT AND WALK YOUR CHILD TO THE DOOR. That’s an accident waiting to happen!  It really does help when EVERYONE follows the rules to keep ALL children safe.  God bless.  Happy Advent!
